By Genevieve Mater Nearly every country arrived yesterday to help celebrate the ACT RSPCA Dog Olympics at its Weston headquarters. It was a day where sporting spirit triumphed and animals reigned supreme. Cattle dogs from Australia, boxers from Germany, Maltese terriers from Malta and, of course, Scottie dogs from Scotland. Sophie the boxer shone as she competed in several events. Her owners, Kathy and Terry Griffiths, of Jerrabomberra, were there cheering her on, every step of the way. ''We're representing Queanbeyan and District Dog Training Club, and Germany,'' Mrs Griffiths said. Sophie competed in hurdles, water polo, the walking race and the Paralympics with gusto. She even brought her own equipment. ''She has her own tennis balls,'' Mrs Griffiths said. While dogs dominated the event watched by a crowd of 200 people, a rat and a ferret also made an appearance. Although the day was full of traditional Olympic events, they were altered slightly to make them more canine friendly. In the water polo events, contestants had 30 seconds to retrieve as many balls as possible from a small pool. In rhythmic gymnastics, owners and their dogs had 30 seconds to impress the judges with a trick or routine.. All participants received free RSPCA membership for their efforts and, while there was no entry charge, participants were encouraged to donate money to assist the RSPCA with its work. |
